University of South Carolina Tops Sexual Health Rankings

In its fourth annual Sexual Health Report Card, the condom maker Trojan rated the University of South Carolina as the nation's top university in sexual health, the Gamecock reports.

The ratings are based on the information and resources available for students at each school. There were 141 NCAA colleges and universities included in the survey, which used data from on-campus student health centers and student polls, among other places. More than 6,000 college students nationwide responded to Trojan's Facebook campaign that asked five questions about a school's sexual health resources.

Eighty-nine University of South Carolina students responded. They generally gave the school high ratings for its Web programs, peer groups, and other resources.

"Our overall goal is seeing students have healthy relationships, including partners, roommates, and friendships," Ryan Wilson, the sexual health program coordinator for the school's Student Health and Violence Prevention agency, tells the Gamecock.

A big factor in South Carolina's solid sexual health awareness program is its peer-to-peer groups. Student Health and Violence Prevention sponsors a student group called Share, which gives students an outlet for sexual health issues.

"I'm really thrilled about the honor," Share President Kat King tells the Gamecock. "I think it's really the visibility of our peers and the amazing research of the SH&VP office that got us here."

Stanford University, the University of Connecticut, Columbia University, and Florida Atlantic University rounded out the rankings' top five.
