| Mission | |
| School mission | ACU has a special focus on learning initiatives that incorporate cutting-edge technology. In fall 2008, ACU will become the first university in the nation to provide an iPhone or iPod Touch to each incoming freshman. These devices will be a central part of the university's innovative learning experiences. Freshmen will use the iPhones or iPod Touches to receive homework alerts, answer in-class surveys and quizzes, get directions to their professors' offices, and check their meal and account balances - among more than 15 other useful web applications already developed. In addition, ACU was one of only six universities named to the first Customer Advisory Board for Google Apps, designed to help Google address the needs and demands of all types of educational institutions. ACU also was selected as one of the first 28 universities featured on Apple's iTunes U site - the only Texas private university, and one of three universities in the state. In spring 2008, the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication began using a new, state-of-the-art converged media newsroom. The large space allows print, broadcast and online student media staffs to work together and is the only student-focused converged newsroom of its kind. In 2008, ACU added 14 online programs to the existing two online master's degrees. The new programs include six more master's degrees, a graduate certificate, and a bachelor's degree completion program with seven areas of emphasis. ACU's mission is to educate students for Christian service and leadership throughout the world. While ACU is affiliated with the Churches of Christ, the university welcomes all students who value the strong Christian environment and exceptional teaching offered on the campus. More than 4,700 students, including about 630 graduate students, come to ACU from 50 states and 60 countries. We have a diverse and global environment, which we believe enriches student learning. Our students are served by about 200 faculty members who focus on high-quality teaching, scholarship and service. Undergraduates at ACU regularly participate in significant research projects alongside faculty members, and ACU is a national leader in producing graduates who go on to complete their doctorates in education and a number of other fields. The university includes the colleges of Arts and Sciences, Biblical Studies, Business Administration, Education and Human Services, the Graduate School, the Graduate School of Theology, the School of Information Technology and Computing, the School of Social Work, and the Patty Hanks Shelton School of Nursing. ACU's College of Business Administration is accredited by AACSB International -- the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business - the world's premiere business-school accreditation. As one of the Southwest's largest private universities, ACU emphasizes quality academics in a distinctively Christian atmosphere. Graduates are accepted into medical school at a rate double the national average, and 90-plus percent of ACU students who apply to law school gain acceptance. The Body & Soul pre-med/pre-dental program at ACU offers students unique opportunities that prepare them for high acceptance into professional schools. ACU is one of only 13 private U.S. universities with an accredited journalism program. |
